JCIH Position Statement
The new Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) Position Statement was published in the Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (JEHDI) in 2019. This document re-affirms the importance that all infants should receive newborn hearing screening and appropriate follow-up in the medical, audiological and habilitation/education environments. A variety of modifications including the risk factors for congenital/early-onset hearing loss were made to reflect best current research. Members of the JCIH with expertise in audiology, medicine/surgery, and early intervention will present the current recommendations of the Committee with an emphasis on changes compared to previous statements. A time-period for detailed questions and answers will follow.

Craig Buchman

Dr. Buchman currently serves as the Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
He is a Neurotologist with extensive experience in pediatric cochlear implantation. Prior to his current position, he served as the division director at UNC where he oversaw the largest pediatric hearing program in the country. Further, he has published extensively in the field and serves as the Chairman of the Joint Commission (JCIH) on Infant Hearing and the past president of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance (ACIA)

Meredith Sugar

Meredith Knueve Sugar is a practicing attorney in the Business & Finance and Private Client groups at the law firm of Taft Stettinius & Hollister, LLP in Columbus OH. She has been a member of AG Bell since 2006 when she and her familiy attended their first AG Bell convention, as was elected to its Board of Directors in 2009. She is currently serving as the president-elect. Meredith and her husband are parents to four children, including an 8-year-old son who uses bilateral cochlear implants, as well as two other sons and a daughter. She has previou7sly served as secretary of the board of directors for AG Bell's Ohio Chapter and is active in other nonprofit capacities, specifically organizations related to hearing loss.

Karen Munoz

Karen Muñoz is department head and professor of audiology at Utah State University in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education. She is also associate director of the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management. Her research focus is in the area of childhood hearing loss.

Christine Yoshinaga-Itano

Dr. Christine Yoshinaga-Itano is a Research Professor in the Institute of Cognitive Science at the University of Colorado-Boulder, the Department of Otolaryngology and Audiology at the University of Colorado-Denver and the Marion Downs Center. In 1996 she developed the Marion Downs National Center. Since 1996, Dr. Yoshinaga-Itano has assisted many state departments of education and public health agencies, schools for the deaf and the blind, and early intervention programs throughout the United States and its territories. In addition, she has served as a consultant for many countries currently developing their early hearing detection and intervention programs, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Korea, Belgium, Poland, Spain, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Thailand, the Philippines, and South Africa.

Patricia Burk

Patricia Burk, is the EHDI Coordinator for the Newborn Hearing Screening Program at the Oklahoma State Department of Health. Patricia helps to promote early identification, diagnosis, and amplification of children with hearing loss throughout the State of Oklahoma. She also facilitates the Oklahoma Audiology Taskforce to address pediatric audiology initiatives across the state. Patricia holds a Masters in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Patricia is internationally certificated as a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist. She has experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist working with children and adults who have hearing loss. Patricia is a Quality Improvement Advisor for the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management and currently serves on the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing as a representative for the Directors of Speech and Hearing Programs of State Health and Welfare Agencies.

Ryan McCreery

Ryan McCreery is a Research Associate at Boys Town National Research Hospital (BTNRH) in Omaha, Nebraska, where his research examines methods of optimizing audibility for children with normal hearing and hearing loss. Ryan is also a collaborator in multiple research laboratories at BTNRH.

Tawny Holmes Hlibok, Esq.

Tawny Holmes Hlibok serves as Language Policy Counsel at Gallaudet University along with being an Associate Professor in the Department of Deaf Studies. She graduated from University of Baltimore School of Law. In addition to her law degree with a family mediation & law certification, she has a Master of Arts in Family Centered Early Education. Ms. Holmes Hlibok has worked four years in teaching deaf and hard of hearing students, mainly in the early childhood education field. As part of her position, she focuses on improving/establishing federal and state policy related to early intervention and education of deaf and hard of hearing children. Ms. Holmes Hlibok strongly believes in the power of collaboration and has contributed a significant amount of her work towards this endeavor, in varying ways, from promoting parent resources to inclusion of deaf and hard of hearing adult professionals.
